And to those who don't know, yes, urinary tract infections can kill the host, whether feline, human, or whomever! If you can't rid your body of urine, you get uremic poisoning because the toxins (bacteria=germs) can't get out. It is EXTREMELY painful as well. Always use common sense with your loved ones, whatever species! If it would hurt us/make us sick, of course it would our cat(s), too! Bhu had a similar problem when he was 4 years old, so we cut the fur on his butt down to a reasonable amount of fluff and it really did help. Bhu has a professional grooming once a month, which also cuts down on a variety of ills, including obnoxious hairballs! Sachie, you are a wonderful mom and you are taking VERY good care of Goma! My Moka got that and I almost lost him. Most people call me crazy when they know how high the vet bill went... But I dont have any regrets.<br /><br />Im really glad Goma is going to be okay :) The fact that he started acting normaly again is a very good sign!!<br /><br />@jmuhj Prescription diet is indeed very bad food. A few years back it was the only food available for cat with that sort of problem, my older cat (he lives with my parents) took it and still live an happy and healthy life. But today, they are about 4-5 brand of food that can prevent those disease. I feel for you both. I know that you take wonderful care of Goma, we do the best we can. It is good that he gets used to be thoroughly groomed (as in a bath and trim) twice a year. I know it is still cool there, but you might want to think about a summer haircut for him. My persian loves having short hair - although I groom him regularly, I can't keep up with his beautiful hair. I think Goma might feel better if he has a "trim", doesn't have to be all over his body. . . The trim will help you keep him clean and feeling comfortable. We are "twins". Today my Sammi-chan had to go to the doctor for bloody urine and straining. He is a Maine Coon and he's 13. He was treated for UTI (urinary tract infection) early in February, too. Doctor wanted to put him on Science Diet special food, but we are a big family, and besides, I do not agree with the doctor that this is good food (a lot of people don't, either). So we have 2 prescriptions, for Prednisolone and for Baytril. So Goma-chan and Sammi-chan will get better together, on opposite coasts! Poor Goma. ;-; I wash my Himmie every week--she hates it, but it's necessary because they just can't clean themselves as effectively as short-haired breeds. I start by going over her with a matbreaker (but since I brush her every day, finding a mat is rare; it just helps to thin the undercoat a bit), then with a wire comb, and I usually clip her butt and the part of her belly close to it, and just the underside of her tail close to it, to about 3/4". She HATES clippers, but then I put her in the bath and she hates that more. I found they can tolerate a bath MUCH better than a shower.. maybe try that? Anyway, if you do it often enough, he'll get used to it.
